Come learn to make your own traditional wooden bow, whether you are a bowhunter, target archer, brushing up on your Lothlorien skills as a wood elf, or just interested in this incredibly rich traditional craft. Beginners are welcome! [All over the age of 12 are welcome! ] We will spend 2 full days taking a seasoned piece of wood, shaping it to bow form, and then the real bowmaking of 'tillering' the bow stave into a shootable bow. We will make bowstrings, and if time, we can wrap the handles of your bows.
Ideally at the end of the weekend you will have your very own shooting traditional wooden bow and bowstring! For the bowhunters out there, we can design the bow from the beginning of the weekend with an optimal hunting draw-weight between 45-65lbs. Friday night we will have a quick 1-2 hour planning session where the instructor will outline the process and the method, and give you a sense of what to expect over the weekend. We will choose bow staves either Friday evening or Saturday morning. Then we will get to work! Snacks and cold drinks will be provided to make sure we stay energized and hydrated. [Lunches will be available for order with Yellow Barn Farm Saturday and Sunday]
All necessary tools will be provided, including spare work gloves. The hand tools you use will be available for purchase (at cost) at the end of the weekend, as an effort to keep the price accessible to those who do not want to walk away with hand tools as well. We will be working with a few different types of wood potentially including black locust, hickory, and ash.
Success is not guaranteed, as your focus, intention, and hard work will determine the outcome in this traditional craft. If you are unable to finish your bow during the workshop itself, the instructors will give you a game plan on how to finish and will be available for a limited time to consult with you on finishing up your bow! We want everyone to be successful and leave the workshop empowered as apprentice bowmakers, able to make more, and follow the path as far as they like.
